Job Title: iSeries Solutions Engineer
Location: Houston, TX (Hybrid or Onsite)
Employment Type: Full-Time / Contract

Overview:

The Solutions Engineer is responsible for supporting and administering various IBM i (iSeries) processes, servers, and integrations with other platforms such as Linux, Windows, Oracle, Python, MS SQL, and MEMSQL.
This role supports web applications in the areas of Apache, HTTP, and Allan Seiden RPM (PHP) administration, as well as the support and upgrades of all third-party applications.
The Solutions Engineer also participates in implementation planning for users, applications, and other system integrations.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Provide system enhancements, modifications, performance tuning, training, and support services for assigned system projects.

  • Support and administer iSeries processes, servers, and system interfaces.

  • Work with IT technical resources to ensure high availability, monitoring, and maintenance of assigned applications.

  • Collaborate with users across departments to prepare specifications for new applications, system enhancements, and modifications.

  • Prepare and maintain documentation, training materials, and user guides.

  • Lead temporary sub-teams focused on specific system projects when assigned.

  • Organize technical projects and articulate them as logical sequences of executable tasks.

  • Develop formal project plans illustrating task sequences, dependencies, estimated effort, due dates, and responsible parties.

  • Identify project critical paths and risk points.

  • Understand and support both current and future-state system, programming, and data integration strategies.

  • Develop and supervise test plans for assigned projects and coordinate end-user participation and sign-off.

  • Provide documentation as required by auditing and compliance controls (e.g., SOX).

  • Adhere to and enforce IT policies, procedures, and organizational standards.

  • Maintain awareness of all projects within the assigned area of responsibility.

  • Work closely with IT leadership to ensure consistency in project approaches, auditing, and system standards.

  • Collaborate with technical staff to deliver systems that align with business needs.

  • Monitor and maintain the integrity of systems, programming, data standards, and application interfaces.

  • Conduct follow-up communication with internal clients to gather feedback and act upon it.

Technical Expertise:

  • Strong technical knowledge of IBM i (iSeries) operations, change management, and software development processes.

  • Proficient in:

    • CLP, RPG ILE, SQL, PowerHA Replication, IBM Operations Navigator

    • PHP and BCD Products (Nexus Portal, Presto, WebSmart)

    • Aldon/ARCAD, FTP, and Windows/Microsoft Office products

  • Ability to estimate and manage tasks and projects, including timelines, budgets, and personnel resources.

  • Understanding of IT governance, compliance requirements, and enterprise-level system support.

Qualifications:

  • 5–10 years of experience in Information Systems.

  • Hands-on IBM i / iSeries experience required.

  • Bachelor’s degree required (preferred in Management Information Systems or Computer Science).

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

  • Willingness to be on call during work and off-hours as necessary.

  • Occasional travel may be required for system implementations or training.
