Job DescriptionJob Title: Automotive Mechanic – Product Development (2nd Shift)Job Description

This role supports a product development garage by performing diagnostics, repairs, and integration work on brand-new development vehicles ranging from trucks to sports cars. You will work from engineering-issued work tickets, complete mechanical and electrical tasks, and collaborate closely with engineers and technicians to test, validate, and improve future vehicle products before they reach the public.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and review work tickets from the engineering team for tasks such as changing tires, performing structural tests, conducting water tests, and completing other assigned mechanical and electrical work on development vehicles.
  • Perform diagnostics and repair activities on a wide range of vehicles, including trucks, performance vehicles, and other platforms used in product development.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and integration issues on development vehicles, identifying root causes and implementing effective solutions.
  • Work independently on assigned tasks while coordinating with team leads and engineers to clarify requirements and priorities when needed.
  • Follow ticket priorities set by group leaders and manage workload to complete both short-duration tasks and longer, more complex assignments.
  • Use personal basic mechanic tools and equipment to perform repairs, adjustments, and component replacements according to engineering specifications.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers who submit tickets, providing feedback on issues found, work performed, and any additional observations from testing and repair activities.
  • Participate in regular team meetings led by group leaders to review safety topics, discuss learning opportunities, and align on daily or weekly priorities.
  • Apply strong mechanical experience to work safely and effectively on high-voltage and electric vehicle systems when applicable, following appropriate procedures.
  • Support ongoing product development efforts by ensuring vehicles are properly maintained, repaired, and ready for testing and validation activities.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area in the garage and handle vehicles and components with care, recognizing they are new development assets.
  • Demonstrate a motivated, positive attitude and willingness to learn new technologies, vehicle platforms, and processes as product development evolves.

Essential Skills

  • At least 5 years of hands-on automotive mechanic experience.
  • Strong mechanical experience with the ability to perform repairs, adjustments, and component replacements independently.
  • Automotive diagnostics experience, including the ability to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve vehicle issues.
  • Experience with GM vehicles or recent experience working on GM products.
  • High school diploma or equivalent education.
  • Ability to work largely on your own on assigned tasks while knowing when to seek guidance from leads or engineers.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills in mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Ownership of a basic mechanic tool set suitable for automotive repair work.
  • Motivated attitude with a strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, team leads, and other technicians in a busy garage environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working in an automotive dealership environment, particularly with GM products, which translates well to this role.
  • Experience with electric vehicles (EVs) and high-voltage systems, which is strongly preferred.
  • Exposure to product development or test environments where vehicles are used for engineering validation.
  • Integration experience involving mechanical and electrical systems on vehicles.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to varying workloads, from quick one-hour tasks to longer assignments that may take several days.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including a positive attitude, openness to feedback, and willingness to support team members.
  • Comfort working under the guidance of group leaders and team leads while maintaining personal accountability for work quality and safety.

Work Environment

This position is based in a product development garage environment focused on future vehicle platforms. You will work on brand-new development vehicles rather than older or heavily worn vehicles, providing a clean and modern setting to apply and grow your skills. The team includes multiple group leaders, several team leads, and a large technician workforce, with approximately 16 technicians in the immediate team and a larger garage staff overall. Work is organized through engineering-issued tickets, and priorities are set by group leaders, creating a structured yet dynamic workflow where some tasks may take an hour and others may extend over several days. Regular team meetings occur to review safety incidents, share learning opportunities, and align on priorities. This is a 2nd shift role, Monday through Friday, from 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. The environment emphasizes safety, collaboration, and professional growth, offering the opportunity to see and work on future products before they reach the public and to challenge yourself by applying your mechanical and diagnostic skills in a cutting-edge development setting. Dress and attire are consistent with a professional automotive garage environment, with appropriate workwear and safety gear expected.
