Job Description

Lead Systems Software Engineer – Object Storage

\n

\n

Boston, (Hybrid) | Up to $200,000 base + benefits | Full-time

\n

An established leader in enterprise data storage is building a brand-new object storage engineering team in Denver and is hiring a Lead Systems Software Engineer as its technical lead. You’ll set technical direction and build alongside the team across the S3 request path, data path, durability and data movement of an exabyte-scale object storage platform – while staying substantially hands-on. This is deep systems work for an engineer who enjoys low-latency code paths, high concurrency, erasure coding and distributed-systems correctness at scale.

\n

\n

What you'll do

\n

    \n
  • Act as technical lead for a new object storage team while remaining substantially hands-on.
  • \n

  • Drive technical direction and key architectural decisions across the data path, durability, S3 and data movement.
  • \n

  • Design and build critical components, lead design and code reviews, and ensure solid automated testing and CI coverage.
  • \n

  • Own complex durability and data-placement work – including erasure coding – ensuring correctness under node loss, disk faults, partial writes and network partitions.
  • \n

  • Mentor engineers, grow technical ownership across the team, and partner with the manager on scope, sequencing and risk.
  • \n

\n

\n

What we're looking for

\n

    \n
  • 10+ years of software development in Go, Python, C, C++ or Rust (or equivalent systems-level expertise).
  • \n

  • Strong distributed-systems and high-performance storage-software design experience.
  • \n

  • Deep Linux: systems programming, debugging, profiling and performance analysis of complex systems.
  • \n

  • Solid grasp of concurrency, synchronisation, locking, async programming and memory management in performance-sensitive code.
  • \n

  • Experience with object storage or S3-compatible APIs, and demonstrated technical leadership of a team or significant workstream.
  • \n

\n

\n

Nice to have

\n

    \n
  • Experience with the Linux I/O subsystem and networking.
  • \n

  • Knowledge of erasure coding principles.
  • \n

  • Experience with storage protocols and clustering design and development.
  • \n

  • Experience with REST, gRPC or Thrift.
  • \n

  • Familiarity with OCaml (parts of the existing codebase are written in it) – welcome, not required.
  • \n

\n

\n

What's on offer

\n

    \n
  • Base salary up to $200,000, depending on experience.
  • \n

  • Medical, dental and vision coverage.
  • \n

  • Health Savings and Flexible Spending Accounts.
  • \n

  • Company-paid life, AD&D and disability insurance.
  • \n

  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer contribution.
  • \n

  • Employee Assistance Program and wellness benefits.
  • \n

  • Hybrid working (3 Days), Boston
  • \n

  • ** Must have full working rights in the United States.
  • \n
