Job Title: Fiber Technician
Location: Lafourche Parish (Thibodaux to Grand Isle)

Job Summary: We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Fiber Technician to join our growing team. The Fiber Technician will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, testing, and repair of fiber optic cable systems that support our high-speed internet, television, and voice services. This role requires a strong understanding of fiber optic technology, excellent troubleshooting skills, and a commitment to safety and quality workmanship. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, self-motivated, and capable of working independently as well as part of a team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Installation:
- Install new fiber optic cables, including aerial, underground, and inside plant (ISP) installations, adhering to industry standards and company specifications.
- Set up and configure various fiber optic equipment, including ONTs, routers, and switches.
- Properly route, secure, and label fiber optic cables in diverse environments (e.g., residential, commercial, utility poles, conduits).
- Splicing & Termination:
- Perform fusion and/or mechanical splicing of fiber optic cables with precision, ensuring minimal signal loss.
- Terminate fiber optic cables with various connector types (e.g., SC, LC, ST) using appropriate methods.
- Testing & Troubleshooting:
- Conduct thorough testing of fiber optic cables and networks using specialized equipment such as OTDRs (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometers), optical power meters, light sources, and visual fault locators (VFLs).
- Analyze test results to identify and diagnose faults (e.g., breaks, bends, high attenuation, dirty connectors).
- Perform efficient troubleshooting to resolve service interruptions and performance issues on fiber optic networks.
- Maintenance & Repair:
- Execute routine maintenance checks and preventive measures on fiber optic infrastructure.
- Repair or replace damaged fiber optic cables, connectors, and associated equipment.
- Clean fiber optic connections to ensure optimal signal transmission.
- Documentation:
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of installations, repairs, test results, and network configurations.
- Complete work orders, service tickets, and other required documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
- Team Collaboration:
- Collaborate effectively with dispatch, engineering, and other technical teams to ensure seamless service delivery and problem resolution.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Relevant vocational training or certifications (e.g., FOA CFOT, BICSI, industry-specific vendor certifications) highly preferred.
- Experience:
- 1-3+ years of experience in fiber optic installation, splicing, and troubleshooting preferred.
- Experience with various fiber optic cable types (e.g., single-mode, multi-mode) and network architectures (GPON, EPON, Active Ethernet).
- Familiarity with telecommunications infrastructure, including conduit systems, poles, and aerial plant.
- Skills:
- Proficient in using fiber optic test equipment (OTDR, power meter, VFL, fusion splicer).
- Excellent problem-solving and diagnostic skills.
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, blueprints, and technical manuals.
- Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
- Ability to work at heights (e.g., on ladders, utility poles) and in confined spaces (e.g., attics, crawl spaces, manholes).
- Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Capable of working outdoors in various weather conditions (hot, cold, wet, dry).
- Comfortable working with hand tools and power tools.
- Ability to distinguish colors for fiber optic cable identification.
