Job Title: Project Engineer
Job Description
The Project Engineer provides technical, quality control, and administrative support to Superintendents and Project Managers on large civil construction project sites. This role ensures that all work complies with approved work plans, submittals, and project specifications, while supporting field crews and coordinating materials, documentation, and reporting. The position offers hands-on experience on a multi-billion-dollar project and the opportunity to build strong geotechnical and civil construction skills under the guidance of experienced senior professionals.
Responsibilities
- Support Superintendents and Project Managers with technical, quality control, and administrative tasks on the construction site.
- Ensure all construction activities follow approved work plans, submittals, specifications, and drawings.
- Perform field quality control tests and assist in water testing, load testing, pilot tests, and water tightness tests conducted by field crews.
- Manage and maintain accurate quality control and production records for the project.
- Review, interpret, and work with construction drawings, project specifications, and related documentation.
- Assist with ordering materials and preparing purchase orders to support project schedules and production needs.
- Support inventory tracking and ensure materials and equipment are available when needed on-site.
- Collaborate with large general contractors and subcontractors to coordinate field activities and resolve technical issues.
- Use Microsoft Suite or similar reporting technology to prepare, update, and distribute project reports and documentation.
- Contribute to construction inspection and field engineering activities related to civil, heavy civil, highway, and transportation projects.
- Help maintain compliance with safety standards and regulations, including OSHA requirements, on the project site.
- Participate in meetings and communications with project stakeholders to provide updates on quality, progress, and technical issues.
Essential Skills
- 1–5 years of experience in construction or engineering for civil, heavy civil, highway, or transportation projects.
- Experience working with construction drawings and project specifications.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Suite or relevant technology for project reporting and documentation.
- Knowledge of construction management support practices in a field environment.
- Understanding of civil engineering construction principles and methods.
- Familiarity with heavy civil and highway construction processes and terminology.
- Ability to support construction inspection and field engineering activities.
- Capacity to interpret and work with construction documents and drawings.
- Awareness of OSHA safety practices applicable to construction sites.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate quality and production records.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or Civil Engineering is a plus.
- Exposure to geotechnical and earth retention systems in civil construction is beneficial.
- Background in structural engineering or environmental engineering related to construction is advantageous.
- Experience working on large, complex projects with general contractors and subcontractors is preferred.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with field crews and project leadership in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong organizational and communication skills to support documentation, reporting, and coordination.
- Interest in developing long-term expertise in geotechnical and civil construction.
Work Environment
The Project Engineer works full-time on-site at major civil construction projects located in St. Louis, Kansas City, or Iowa. The role is embedded within a large general contractor environment, collaborating closely with subcontractors and field crews on heavy civil and highway construction activities. Lodging is provided at the project location, and a daily per diem of $60 supports living expenses while on-site. Travel home for an extended weekend is available every two weeks, with reimbursement at IRS travel rates or covered flights. The work is field-based and involves active participation in construction operations, inspections, and testing, using standard construction technologies, documentation tools, and Microsoft Suite for reporting. The environment is fast-paced and safety-focused, offering substantial onsite experience on a multi-billion-dollar project and strong professional development support from senior managers.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Kalamazoo, MI.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $36.00 - $40.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
