Position Description
The Scrum Master serves as a servant leader and Agile coach for one or more project teams, facilitating Scrum events, removing impediments, and helping teams deliver value effectively. The Scrum Master promotes and supports the adoption of Agile and Scrum principles, practices, and rules while working closely with Product Owners, development teams, and stakeholders.
The role is responsible for fostering a collaborative environment, improving team performance, encouraging self-organization, and supporting continuous improvement throughout the software development lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- Facilitate Scrum ceremonies, including Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Reviews, and Retrospectives.
- Remove or help resolve impediments that impact team productivity and delivery.
- Coach teams on Agile principles, Scrum practices, self-organization, and continuous improvement.
- Work closely with Product Owners to support backlog refinement, prioritization, and Sprint readiness.
- Promote transparency, accountability, and effective communication across project teams.
- Identify and help resolve conflicts within teams and across stakeholder groups.
- Track Sprint progress, team commitments, risks, dependencies, and impediments.
- Use Agile project management tools such as Azure DevOps or Jira to manage Sprint activities, backlogs, and work items.
- Support Agile transformation and adoption of Scrum, Kanban, and scaled Agile practices.
- Facilitate communication between business stakeholders, technical teams, and end users.
- Encourage data-driven continuous improvement through Agile metrics and team feedback.
- Influence stakeholders and team members without direct authority.
Required Skills
- Strong knowledge of Agile frameworks and methodologies, including Scrum, Kanban, and SAFe.
- Strong experience facilitating meetings and group discussions to achieve consensus and maintain focus on outcomes.
- Hands-on experience with Agile project management tools such as Azure DevOps or Jira.
- Strong coaching and mentoring skills with the ability to develop high-performing, self-organizing teams.
- Experience identifying, managing, and resolving team and stakeholder conflicts.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with business, technical, and end-user groups.
- Ability to influence and collaborate without direct authority.
- Strong organizational, facilitation, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Experience
- Experience working as a Scrum Master or Agile Coach in a government, public-sector, or large enterprise technology environment.
- Experience supporting multiple concurrent Scrum teams.
- Experience working within a scaled Agile framework such as SAFe.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams and distributed stakeholders.
- Experience with enterprise software development and technology projects.
Education & Certification
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of professional experience facilitating Agile/Scrum teams or working in a project coordination/Scrum Master capacity.
- Equivalent professional work experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
- Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) or Professional Scrum Master (PSM) certification is preferred.
Work Environment
- Hybrid position based in Phoenix, AZ.
- Position may require working primarily in an office environment with the ability to collaborate effectively with project teams and stakeholders.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, and work at a computer for extended periods.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in person and through standard business communication channels.
