SierTeK Ltd. is seeking a Bioinformatician to support an opportunity at Wright Patterson AFB, OH.
POSITION OVERVIEW SECTION
The employee will provide advanced bioinformatics support to USAFSAM by analyzing genomic sequencing data, developing and maintaining analytical pipelines, and contributing to research on respiratory pathogens and other infectious agents. This role includes supporting diagnostics development, sequence curation, and software pipeline management using modern computational tools and cloud environments.
Essential Job Functions
Genomic & Bioinformatics Analysis
- Conduct sequence analysis for respiratory and operationally significant pathogens.
- Implement, run, and maintain bioinformatics pipelines in Linux/Unix and cloud computing environments.
- Compile and curate sequencing data from public databases; submit and maintain datasets for public access.
Pipeline Development & Data Management
- Develop reproducible analytical workflows using version control (e.g., Git).
- Maintain code repositories, respond to enhancement requests, and annotate workflows to ensure reproducibility.
- Collect, assemble, and interpret large genomic datasets for surveillance and research efforts.
Innovation & Collaboration
- Support the development and evaluation of novel diagnostic tools for pathogen detection.
- Participate in publishing findings and collaborating with programmers, analysts, and end users.
- Stay current with emerging molecular and sequencing techniques.
Data Governance & Compliance
- Conduct data archiving and ensure data integrity throughout the collection and analysis process.
- Ensure compliance with federal regulations, including the Privacy Act of 1974 and HIPAA, for confidentiality of health records.
- Complete ad hoc data tasks as assigned by USAFSAM leadership.
Qualifications
Minimum Position Requirements
Education:
- Master's degree in Biological Sciences, Public Health, Biocomputing, or a related field.
Technical Competencies:
- Proficiency in scripting, programming, and data analysis (e.g., Linux/Unix, Python, Perl, R/RStudio, Tableau, Excel).
- Expert-level understanding of bioinformatics software for sequence assembly, gene expression analysis, and data visualization.
- Experience with workflow languages and containerization tools (e.g., Nextflow, Snakemake, Docker, Conda).
- Familiarity with network/server administration to support secure data storage and flow.
Data Management Skills:
- Experience with data dictionaries, collection tools, and defining minimum data elements.
- Ability to consult with programmers and end-users regarding data requirements and interpretation.
Compliance Requirement:
- Must have a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) in place, with documentation provided to the Program Manager.
