This role works directly with manufacturing and packaging operations to inspect incoming materials and components, collect and manage samples, review batch documentation, and verify that production activities follow approved procedures and quality requirements. The technician spends most of the shift on the manufacturing floor, packaging lines, warehouse areas, and raw-material sampling rooms, helping ensure that only compliant materials and components move forward in the production process.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect and sample incoming raw materials, components, and finished products to ensure they meet applicable quality requirements.
  • Perform detailed incoming inspections and verify that materials conform to specifications and approved standards.
  • Collect raw material and finished-product samples from manufacturing and packaging operations according to established procedures.
  • Label, document, retain, and submit samples accurately and completely, following defined sampling and documentation protocols.
  • Review batch records and verify that the correct components and materials are used on manufacturing and packaging lines.
  • Confirm and document lot numbers, expiration dates, materials, and other critical production information for each batch.
  • Support manufacturing-line and packaging-line quality activities, with a primary focus on filling lines, production orders, packaging orders, and component inspection on second shift.
  • Identify documentation errors, component discrepancies, or potential quality concerns early, before they impact production or product release.
  • Follow current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), Good Documentation Practices (GDP), data-integrity requirements, and approved standard operating procedures (SOPs) at all times.
  • Complete all quality records, logs, and controlled documentation accurately, legibly, and contemporaneously.
  • Prioritize raw-material and component inspection and sampling activities to help prevent manufacturing delays and line stoppages.
  • Adjust daily priorities based on changing production schedules, business needs, and urgent quality requests.
  • After completing training, review and approve packaging orders and production orders within defined authority limits.
  • Use electronic quality systems, manufacturing systems, or ERP systems to document quality activities and material status.
  • Prepare basic Excel spreadsheets, written documents, and memos to support quality reporting and communication.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) in warehouse, production, and sampling environments, including a full-face respirator when needed.
  • Participate in company-provided fit testing for a full-face respirator and maintain compliance with respiratory protection requirements.
  • Lift, move, and handle materials weighing up to 50 pounds as part of routine inspection and sampling activities.
  • Maintain flexibility to support nearby facilities when business needs require cross-site coverage or cross-training.
  • For first-shift coverage scenarios, transport samples to an external testing laboratory using a personal vehicle, in accordance with company procedures and with mileage reimbursement provided.
  • Actively contribute to a culture of quality and continuous improvement by communicating issues, suggesting improvements, and collaborating with production and quality teams.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum 1 year of quality assurance or quality inspection experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Working knowledge of current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) and Good Documentation Practices (GDP).
  • Ability to follow and apply standard operating procedures (SOPs) and data-integrity requirements.
  • Experience verifying lot numbers, expiration dates, components, and batch records with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Experience collecting raw material, component, and/or finished product samples in a regulated setting.
  • Ability to work with urgency while managing competing priorities and maintaining accuracy in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete controlled manufacturing and quality documentation accurately and consistently.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word, including the ability to create basic documents, logs, and memos.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform tasks that require regular movement across production, warehouse, and sampling areas.
  • Ability to complete and pass full-face respirator fit testing and comply with ongoing respirator use requirements.
  • Reliable personal transportation to support sample delivery to an external testing laboratory when required.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Associates or Bachelors degree in a scientific discipline preferred; equivalent relevant experience accepted.
  • Experience with MasterControl or another electronic Quality Management System (QMS) preferred.
  • Experience with ERP systems such as SAP, Sage, or similar platforms preferred.
  • Experience with electronic batch records and electronic documentation systems preferred.
  • Prior experience in pharmaceutical, medical device, or other regulated manufacturing environments preferred.
  • Prior experience with raw material, component, or finished product sampling and inspection strongly preferred.
  • Interest in growing within a structured quality career path, including potential advancement to higher-level Quality Technician or Quality Engineer roles (engineering path typically requires a college degree).
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to reprioritize tasks based on changing production and quality needs.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills to collaborate effectively with production, warehouse, and quality teams.

Work Environment

This is a fully on-site, second-shift position in a fast-paced, regulated manufacturing environment. The standard hours are 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., with a 30-minute lunch break. The Quality Technician works across production lines, packaging and filling lines, warehouse areas, component-inspection areas, and a dedicated raw-material sampling room. The role involves frequent interaction with raw materials, components, finished products, batch records, lot numbers, and expiration-dated materials, as well as frequent movement between different operational areas. Work priorities may shift during the shift based on manufacturing schedules and business needs, requiring flexibility and responsiveness. Required personal protective equipment must be worn in designated areas, and certain materials require the use of a full-face respirator; the company coordinates respirator fit testing internally. The position requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and handle materials of varying sizes and configurations. The primary work location is the Mount Prospect facility, with occasional support at nearby facilities, such as Glenview, based on business needs and cross-training. Candidates participate in an on-site interview and facility tour at the Mount Prospect location to view the production environment, materials, components, equipment, and the physical size of items being inspected. This role offers hands-on exposure to incoming material inspection, component inspection, raw-material and finished-product sampling, batch documentation, and electronic quality systems, as well as a clear opportunity to expand responsibilities over time and grow within a developing quality technician career path.
