Job DescriptionWe are looking for a Cable Technician to support underground fiber line locating activities in Ames, Iowa. This Long-term Contract position is ideal for someone who enjoys field-based work, values accuracy, and takes safety seriously while working around active construction and maintenance projects. The role focuses on identifying buried infrastructure, documenting findings clearly, and coordinating with on-site teams to help prevent service disruptions and excavation risks.
Responsibilities:
• Identify and mark underground fiber routes before excavation, repair, or installation work begins.
• Review utility maps, field diagrams, and available records to determine the correct path of buried infrastructure.
• Record completed locate activities accurately and maintain organized documentation for field and project reference.
• Work closely with construction and maintenance crews to communicate marked areas and promote safe digging practices.
• Perform field assignments outdoors across varying site and weather conditions while maintaining productivity and attention to detail.
• Operate in accordance with established safety standards and follow required procedures on every job site.• At least 1 year of relevant field experience, preferably in utility locating, cable work, or a related outdoor technical role.
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and ability to use a company-provided vehicle for day travel.
• Comfortable working outside for extended periods in changing weather and site conditions.
• Ability to read and interpret maps, drawings, and utility-related documentation.
• Strong accuracy, dependability, and awareness when working near underground infrastructure.
• Previous utility locating experience is helpful, though candidates with transferable field experience may also be considered.
