We are seeking a full-time Senior Hardware Engineer to join a growing engineering team in Buffalo Grove, Illinois.

\n

The company develops innovative hardware and software products for the automotive aftermarket. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in hardware design and development, with a proven track record of taking products from initial concept through to production.

\n

This position requires strong technical expertise, hands-on engineering ability, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively across multiple engineering and product teams.

\n

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

\n

    \n
  • Develop hardware projects from initial concept through to production.
  • \n

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including software, firmware, mechanical engineering, sourcing, and project management.
  • \n

  • Perform schematic capture and PCB layout using Altium Designer.
  • \n

  • Prepare PCB designs and projects for manufacturing.
  • \n

  • Prototype and test new hardware designs.
  • \n

  • Debug, troubleshoot, and validate electronic circuits.
  • \n

  • Participate in board bring-up alongside the firmware engineering team.
  • \n

  • Develop proof-of-concept firmware applications to test hardware functionality where required; experience in this area is a plus.
  • \n

  • Produce detailed design specifications, schematics, and supporting technical documentation.
  • \n

  • Work with suppliers to source electronic components and finished assemblies.
  • \n

  • Manage project requirements and deadlines, working with Project Management to create and maintain project schedules.
  • \n

  • Break functional requirements down into clearly defined engineering tasks.
  • \n

  • Serve as lead hardware engineer on projects where appropriate.
  • \n

  • Conduct peer design reviews.
  • \n

  • Provide technical input into product planning and new product concepts.
  • \n

  • Mentor and support other engineers.
  • \n

Skills and Qualifications

\n

    \n
  • 5+ years of hands-on hardware development experience with a proven track record of delivering hardware products.
  • \n

  • 5+ years of PCB design experience using ECAD tools such as Altium Designer or equivalent.
  • \n

  • 2+ years of hands-on PCB layout experience.
  • \n

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • \n

  • Extensive circuit prototyping experience.
  • \n

  • Strong circuit testing, troubleshooting, and debugging skills.
  • \n

  • Circuit simulation experience is advantageous.
  • \n

  • Experience with advanced PCB design techniques, including impedance control and length matching.
  • \n

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • \n

  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • \n

  • Ability to work autonomously and meet project deadlines.
  • \n

  • Collaborative, flexible, and positive approach to working with others.
  • \n

  • Proven ability to deliver within agreed timelines in a fast-paced engineering environment.
  • \n

Relevant Experience

\n

    \n
  • Experience designing microcontroller- and/or microprocessor-based systems.
  • \n

  • Proven experience taking hardware projects from concept through to production.
  • \n

  • Ability to diagnose complex issues spanning hardware, firmware, and system software.
  • \n

  • Hands-on experience using instrumentation such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and protocol analyzers to debug embedded systems at the hardware level.
  • \n

  • Experience with automotive OBD-II (On-Board Diagnostics) and vehicle communication protocols is advantageous.
  • \n

Physical Requirements

\n

While performing the duties of this role, the employee will regularly be required to sit and work at a desk or engineering workbench for prolonged periods.
