Job Description: The design engineer shall be responsible for supporting the Project Managers in fulfilling the design obligations of multiple ongoing projects.
Responsibilities:
- Daily communication with multiple Project Managers
- Reviewing architectural drawings to discern information relevant to the vertical transportation discipline, conveying this information to the Project Manager
- Reviewing construction documents to confirm that VDA recommendations are coordinated
- Creating and modifying drawings of vertical transportation elements, utilizing AutoCAD software and VDA standards
- Performing structural, electrical, and mechanical load calculations
- Coordinating with members of multi-disciplinary building design teams
- Preparing reports, memos, and e-mails regarding VDA design
- Researching manufacturer products for development of design standards
- Preparing specifications for designed vertical transportation system
- Assisting in the review of contractor bids and specifications for compliance with VDA design
- Reviewing vendor shop drawings and “Requests for Information” against VDA design
- Evaluating information for compliance: Using relevant information and individual judgment to determine whether design elements and communications to clients, comply with laws, governing codes, and, both industry-wide and internal, standards.
- Communication with external contacts: This includes, but is not limited to contactors, vendors, manufacturers, architects, and other engineering disciplines. Communication includes exchanges by e-mail, other written forms, phone conversation, and in person
- Performing on-site surveys of existing vertical transportation equipment
Skills: The following skills are considered essential to be an effective member of the VDA Design Services department:
- Ability to read architectural and structural drawings
- Ability to communicate effectively:
- Verbally: In-person, on the phone, and via web meetings
- Textually: E-mail, reports, and providing comments on document reviews
- Ability to create, modify, and review drawings in AutoCAD and REVIT
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Outlook
- Ability to safely navigate an active construction site or existing hoistway, under proper supervision
- Critical Thinking — Using logic and deductive reasoning to determine applicable information and objectively analyze the information to draw a rational conclusion.
- Reading Comprehension — Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work-related documents.
- Active Learning — Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making.
- Active Listening — Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering required
