Job Title: Mainframe Legacy Modernization Engineer

Location: Jersey City, NJ (Onsite)

Requirement: Local candidates only; CICS is a mandatory skill; must be open to in-person interviews.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Core Expertise: 8–10 years of IT experience with a heavy focus on mainframe development and modernization.
  • Mainframe Stack: Expert-level proficiency in COBOL and CICS transaction programming.
  • Batch & Utilities: Strong command of JCL and z/OS utilities (SORT, IDCAMS, IEBGENER).
  • Database & Storage: Deep knowledge of DB2 (SQL optimization, performance tuning) and VSAM file structures.
  • Modernization Patterns: Hands-on knowledge of re-host, re-platform, re-architect, and Strangler-Fig approaches.
  • Modern Tech: Experience with API design, REST services, and refactoring COBOL into Java.
  • Domain: Previous experience in the Banking/Financial industry.

Role Overview

The Mainframe Legacy Modernization Engineer is a critical role at BNY focused on transforming monolithic legacy systems into modern, scalable architectures. Working onsite in Jersey City, you will lead the functional decomposition of complex applications to extract business rules and design migration strategies that minimize risk. This position bridges the gap between traditional mainframe environments (CICS/COBOL) and modern cloud-native frameworks, ensuring that modernized systems maintain the high data integrity standards required for large-scale financial datasets.

Technical Core & Responsibilities

Analysis & Reverse Engineering

  • Functional Decomposition: Analyze complex mainframe applications to understand business rules, data flows, and system interdependencies using call-chain and inventory analysis.
  • Rule Extraction: Document technical and business rules using automated discovery or reverse-engineering tools from monolithic applications.


Modernization & Refactoring

  • Migration Strategy: Design and implement modernization paths including re-factoring and re-architecting legacy systems.
  • Code Transformation: Convert COBOL logic into modern languages like Java using manual re-engineering or automated refactoring techniques.
  • Batch Modernization: Transition JCL-based batch processes into cloud-native frameworks such as Spring Batch and workflow orchestration tools.


System Integration & Parity

  • Incremental Patterns: Apply Strangler-Fig and coexistence models to reduce migration risk during long-term transitions.
  • API Integration: Support the migration of scheduling and file transfers through modern API design and integration middleware.
  • Validation: Ensure strict functional parity and data integrity between the original legacy systems and the newly modernized versions.
