Job Description

Senior IBM i (iSeries / AS/400) Systems & Operations Administrator

Mag Instrument, Inc., maker of the world-famous MAGLITE® flashlight, is seeking an experienced IBM i professional to support our business-critical IBM i environment and provide general IT support across the organization.

This is primarily a systems administration and operations position, not an application-development role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer and maintain IBM Power Systems running IBM i / iSeries / AS/400.
  • Monitor system health, performance, storage, jobs, queues, subsystems, messages, and spool files.
  • Perform IBM i upgrades, PTF installation, IPLs, and planned system maintenance.
  • Manage user profiles, authorities, licensed programs, and system access.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot daily, nightly, monthly, and annual batch processing.
  • Support month-end and year-end processing, including job execution, troubleshooting, reporting, and coordination with Accounting.
  • Manage and verify IBM i backups, restores, and disaster-recovery procedures.
  • Troubleshoot failed jobs, system messages, connectivity issues, and production problems.
  • Maintain clear system, operational, backup, and processing documentation.
  • Provide hands-on support for Windows PCs, printers, Microsoft 365, IBM i client connectivity, and general end-user issues.
  • Assist with basic networking and connectivity troubleshooting, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPNs, switches, and related systems.
  • Coordinate with IBM, software providers, and other technical vendors when escalation is required.

Occasional after-hours work may be required for system maintenance, upgrades, month-end processing, or other business-critical activities.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of hands-on IBM i / iSeries / AS/400 systems administration or operations experience.
  • Strong knowledge of IBM i work management, batch processing, jobs, queues, subsystems, messages, and spool management.
  • Experience with IBM i operating-system maintenance, PTFs, IPLs, backups, and recovery.
  • Experience supporting month-end, year-end, or other production processing cycles.
  • Working knowledge of IBM i security, user profiles, and authorities.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Solid Windows PC and general end-user support experience.
  • Working knowledge of TCP/IP and common business networking concepts.
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of issues through resolution.
  • Strong documentation and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with any of the following is beneficial:

  • IBM Hardware Management Console (HMC)
  • IBM Power Systems
  • IBM i Access Client Solutions (ACS)
  • CL commands or basic CL programming
  • DB2 for i and SQL
  • Job scheduling and automation tools
  • Manufacturing, ERP, accounting, inventory, or distribution systems
  • EDI and automated file-transfer processes
  • Microsoft 365, Active Directory / Entra ID, and Windows Server
  • Network switching, firewalls, VPNs, and enterprise storage

RPG programming experience is a plus, but is not required. Familiarity with RPG, SQL, or CL can be helpful when troubleshooting applications and production jobs; however, this position is focused primarily on IBM i systems administration and operations rather than software development.
