Position: Systems Engineer I/II – Combat Systems Integration
Nature of Role:
Integration candidate will be responsible for managing, configuring, troubleshooting, and maintaining the software and hardware configurations associated with the AN/BYG-1 Combat Control System within Code 25 test bays. The position requires a highly experienced professional capable of independently supporting complex laboratory environments, coordinating across multiple technical disciplines, and applying advanced knowledge of systems administration, network administration, software and hardware integration, troubleshooting, configuration management, and technical documentation.
The Integration candidate will work as a key member of a highly skilled, multi-functional, and multi-disciplined team supporting Development, In-Service, and Shipset test environments. Responsibilities include planning and executing test bay configurations and reconfigurations, supporting major test events, establishing platform builds, and preparing high-visibility development builds for evaluation and testing of current and emerging submarine combat control capabilities.
The position provides extensive exposure to multiple software and hardware baselines, ranging from legacy configurations to advanced submarine Combat Control System platforms. The successful candidate is expected to develop and maintain an advanced, well-rounded understanding of the systems, interfaces, tools, and processes required to support these environments and to serve as a technical resource to other team members and supported organizations.
Integration candidates are expected to independently identify and resolve complex technical issues, determine appropriate courses of action, coordinate technical support when required, and ensure test bay configurations meet applicable program and test requirements. The position requires a high degree of technical judgment, attention to detail, flexibility, and the ability to adapt to changing requirements and priorities.
Integration candidate will support team knowledge development and may participate in technical training and professional certification opportunities. Occasional travel may be required to support platform installations and related activities aboard submarines of various configurations.
Responsibilities:
Test Bay Installation, Configuration, and Maintenance
- Independently plan and execute installation, configuration, reconfiguration, integration, grooming, and maintenance activities for Development, In-Service, and Shipset test bays in accordance with applicable PMS-425 Program Plans and established procedures.
- Maintain advanced working knowledge of AN/BYG-1 software and hardware configurations, including applicable TI/APB combinations, interfaces, and related systems.
- Develop and maintain SME-level knowledge of assigned test environments and configuration baselines.
- Execute complex test bay builds and reconfigurations in support of major test events, platform builds, and development activities.
- Complete and review applicable bay build and grooming checklists, status reports, Qualifying Evidence (OQE), and other required technical documentation.
- Analyze configuration issues and determine appropriate corrective actions while maintaining configuration integrity and adherence to applicable program requirements.
- Coordinate with technical, hardware, subsystem, engineering, and other support organizations to resolve complex integration and configuration issues.
- Provide technical guidance and support to less-experienced personnel as required.
Test Bay Support
- Provide real-time and on-call technical support for test bay operations, including troubleshooting, fault isolation, restoration, and configuration verification.
- Diagnose software, hardware, network, and system-level issues and independently implement or coordinate appropriate corrective actions.
- Support test teams in maintaining test bay readiness and resolving issues that could affect scheduled test activities.
- Evaluate configuration changes and their potential impact on system operation and test objectives.
- Maintain accurate technical documentation and communicate configuration status, issues, risks, and resolutions to appropriate technical and program personnel.
Test and Evaluation Support
- Support Test and Evaluation (T&E) activities as required.
- Perform applicable system testing, software and media generation, configuration verification, and technical data/report generation.
- Support the preparation and execution of test events involving complex hardware and software configurations.
- Provide technical input regarding system configuration, integration issues, troubleshooting results, and test readiness.
Additional Responsibilities
- Serve as a technical resource and subject matter expert within assigned areas of responsibility.
- Participate in continuous process improvement and development of integration procedures, documentation, and technical practices.
- Maintain awareness of applicable cybersecurity, information assurance, configuration management, and classified-information handling requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Specific Job Requirements:
- AN/BYG-1 Combat Control System experience.
- Fire Control Technician (FT) or other directly applicable submarine combat systems experience other applicable technical rate/skill set, systems engineering, systems administration, network administration, software/hardware integration, or other directly applicable professional IT experience.
- Demonstrated ability to independently perform complex systems integration, configuration, troubleshooting, and technical support activities in a laboratory, test, or operational environment.
- Advanced working knowledge of Linux operating systems and command-line interfaces, including the ability to troubleshoot operating-system, network, software, and hardware issues.
- Demonstrated experience troubleshooting complex hardware and software configurations and determining appropriate corrective actions.
- Intermediate or advanced knowledge of the AN/BYG-1 Combat Control System and its subsystems is highly preferred.
- Experience with BYG-1 software installation processes, system functions, configuration management, and applicable test environments is highly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate effectively with technical, engineering, hardware, subsystem, and program organizations to resolve complex technical issues.
- Must possess a strong understanding of security practices associated with classified environments, including proper handling of classified material, need-to-know requirements, Operations Security (OPSEC), and Information Security (INFOSEC).
- Must be capable of working independently, exercising sound technical judgment, managing competing priorities, and supporting high-visibility test events with limited supervision.
- Must be willing and able to work occasional shifts and weekends as required to meet program schedules.
- Occasional travel may be required based on program needs and assignment.
Preferred Experience & Skills:
- AN/BYG-1 Combat Control System experience.
- Fire Control Technician (FT) or other directly applicable submarine combat systems experience.
- Experience supporting submarine combat system test, integration, installation, or platform build activities.
- Experience with Linux system administration and network administration.
- Experience troubleshooting complex hardware/software interfaces and integrated systems.
- Experience with configuration management, technical documentation, and test support activities.
- Professional certifications may include, but are not limited to:
- Security+
- Network+
- Linux+
- Cisco Certified Technician (CCT)
- Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux System Administrator certifications
- Other relevant systems, networking, Linux, or cybersecurity certifications.
Desired Experience:
- AN/BYG-1 Combat Control System experience.
- Fire Control Technician (FT) or other directly applicable submarine combat systems experience.
- Significant experience in systems integration, systems administration, network administration, software/hardware troubleshooting, test support, or directly related technical disciplines.
- Experience supporting AN/BYG-1 or comparable submarine Combat Control System environments is highly desirable.
Work Location
NUWC on-site. This position is not conducive to telework. Occasional shift work and weekends may be required to meet schedule tasking needs.
