Job Description
Senior Embedded Linux Engineer | Long Island, NY (On-site) | C2C / W2 / Permanent
\n
X4 Technology is hiring a Senior Embedded Linux Engineer for an on-site role based in Brentwood, NY (Suffolk County / Long Island).
\n
\n
Our client is a well-established, growing engineering organization building next-generation hardware products, backed by a stable, well-resourced engineering function and a strong pipeline of ongoing product development. They offer a genuinely flexible working pattern (9/80 schedule - every other Friday off) and a collaborative, hands-on engineering culture where you'll have real ownership over the systems you build.
\n
\n
Open to C2C, W2, or permanent applicants - engagement type is flexible depending on what works best for you.
\n
Both mid-level and senior-level candidates will be considered - level is flexible depending on your experience.
\n
\n
Interviewing now, with the ability to start from September.
\n
This is a hands-on embedded Linux development role - not a Linux administration or network configuration position. You will be writing real code: building and customizing embedded Linux images, developing kernel-level and application-level software, and working close to the hardware.
\n
\n
What you'll be doing:
\n
- \n
- Building and maintaining custom Linux images using Yocto / OpenEmbedded
- Writing and debugging Linux device drivers, kernel modules, and board support packages (BSPs)
- Developing application-layer software in C/C++ on embedded Linux targets
- Bringing up new hardware platforms and supporting system integration
- Working across the full stack from bootloader to user-space application
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
What we're looking for:
\n
- \n
- Solid hands-on experience developing on embedded Linux (Yocto-based systems ideal, but strong Debian-family experience - Ubuntu, Raspberry Pi OS, Knoppix - is also highly valued and transferable)
- Real coding experience, not just configuration or system administration - you should be comfortable writing and debugging kernel drivers, BSPs, and application code, not just deploying or configuring existing images
- Strong C/C++ fundamentals
- Familiarity with build systems, version control, and cross-compilation toolchains
- Bonus: RTOS background is a plus, but this role is squarely focused on embedded Linux application development rather than RTOS-only work
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
Location: This is an on-site role in Brentwood, NY, with a 9/80 working pattern. Candidates must be local to, or willing to relocate to, the Long Island / Suffolk County area - this is not a remote position.
