This onsite Assistant Project Manager role supports large-scale mechanical construction projects at a federal facility, working closely with project managers to coordinate documentation, maintain logs, and ensure safety compliance. The position focuses on mechanical contracting and involves daily collaboration with other contractors and the general contractor on complex projects involving HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and conveyance systems.
Responsibilities
- Assist project managers with preparing, reviewing, and processing project documents, including RFIs, change orders, and other contract-related paperwork.
- Review, organize, and maintain contract documents, drawings, schedules, and other project records to ensure accurate and up-to-date information is available to the project team.
- Support the management of equipment logs, tracking usage, status, and maintenance requirements for mechanical systems and related construction equipment.
- Perform regular site walkthroughs to monitor safety compliance and adherence to OSHA and other applicable safety standards.
- Collaborate with project managers and project teams on large-scale mechanical contracts, contributing to planning, coordination, and execution of project activities.
- Assist in overseeing operations of conveyance systems as part of the mechanical construction scope.
- Participate in project meetings and coordinate with other contractors and the general contractor to resolve issues and maintain project schedules.
- Utilize construction management software, such as Procore or similar platforms, to track project progress, documentation, and communication.
- Support federal and commercial construction project requirements by following established procedures, standards, and engineering guidelines.
- Read and interpret blueprints and construction drawings to understand mechanical scopes, installation requirements, and coordination needs.
- Contribute to maintaining a safe, organized, and efficient job site environment through proactive communication and adherence to project protocols.
Essential Skills
- 5 years of experience in mechanical contracting, with a focus on larger-scale mechanical construction projects.
- Experience working as an assistant project manager on large mechanical contracts.
- Strong project management skills, including document control, scheduling support, and coordination of project activities.
- Hands-on experience in mechanical construction, with 2–4 years of mechanical construction experience specifically noted.
- Solid understanding of HVAC systems, plumbing, and fire protection systems within construction projects.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction drawings accurately.
- Knowledge of Procore or other construction management software platforms used for documentation and project tracking.
- Familiarity with OSHA standards and safety practices applicable to construction sites.
- Experience in federal construction and commercial construction environments.
- Background in engineering or mechanical disciplines relevant to mechanical contracting.
- Experience overseeing operations of conveyance systems on construction projects.
- Proven history of working on large projects or within large project teams.

Work Environment
This role is fully onsite at a federal facility in Washington, DC, with a boots-on-the-ground environment that emphasizes daily presence on the construction site. You work hand-in-hand with other contractors and the general contractor, engaging directly with ongoing mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and conveyance system installations. The setting is a fast-paced, collaborative construction environment where safety compliance and coordination are critical. This is a Permanent position based out of Saint Paul, MN.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $85000.00 - $105000.00/yr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
