Job Description

Job Description

Join Our Team as a Telecom Field Technician II in Pasadena, CA!

Who We Are:
At 5x5 Telecom, we’re all about shaking things up in the telecom world! We’re a dynamic team with a proven track record of making things happen, offering enterprise solutions including internet, VoIP, and managed services that blow the competition out of the water. With millions of annual users, we’re the only carrier with redundancy at all on-net projects, meaning less downtime and lightning-fast installs (1-2 days – yeah, we’re that quick! ).

The Role: Telecom Field Technician II – Be the Backbone of Business Connectivity

Are you a hands-on tech expert who thrives in a fast-paced, service-driven environment? Do you have a passion for solving real-world network challenges and making systems run like clockwork? If you bring Network & Telecom Field support experience, strong troubleshooting skills, and the ability to think on your feet, we invite you to apply to join our team as a Telecom Field Technician II and make an immediate impact.

Position Overview

Reporting directly to the Director of Network Operations, the Field Telecommunications Technician 2 is a high-impact role designed for a resourceful expert who thrives at the intersection of physical infrastructure and logical networking.

In this role, you will move beyond basic support to own the deployment and stability of our enterprise network solutions. You aren’t just "making systems run"—you are performing high-level troubleshooting of Layer 2/3 environments, leading complex onsite installations (from fiber backhaul to microwave radio alignment), and ensuring that our 1–2 day "lightning-fast" install promise is met with precision. This position requires a technician who can work independently in the field, think critically under pressure, and serve as a technical mentor within the operations team.

Core Responsibilities

Advanced Network Support and Tier 2 Escalation

  • Tier 2 Troubleshooting: Act as the primary escalation point for complex network outages and performance issues, resolving tickets that require deep-dive diagnostics beyond Tier 1 capabilities.
  • Incident Management: Proactively monitor network health alerts and lead the response for service-affecting events to minimize downtime.
  • Root-Cause Analysis: Conduct thorough post-mortem analysis on systemic issues and implement permanent corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • On-Call Leadership: Participate in a rotating after-hours/weekend schedule, serving as the lead technical responder for emergency field repairs.

Precision Installation and Configuration

  • Full-Stack Deployment: Lead the onsite and remote configuration and installation of enterprise-grade routers, switches, microwave backhaul radios, and VoIP gateways.
  • RF and Wireless Engineering: Perform precision alignment of microwave links and conduct path analysis to ensure maximum throughput and stability.
  • Infrastructure Excellence: Execute and oversee complex fiber and copper cabling projects, utilizing OTDR and power meters to certify performance and reliability.
  • Field Logistics: Manage site-specific requirements, including ladder work, rooftop deployments, and hardware mounting, ensuring all work meets safety and aesthetic standards.

Network Integrity and Documentation

  • Infrastructure Audits: Lead scheduled maintenance, firmware upgrades, and hardware audits to ensure the network remains secure and optimized.
  • System Documentation: Create and maintain high-fidelity network diagrams, IP management logs, and site-specific configuration records.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify performance bottlenecks and hardware trends, providing data-driven recommendations for infrastructure scaling and upgrades.

Technical Consultation and Training

  • Complex Problem Solving: Resolve high-level hardware and software conflicts via phone, email, or onsite visits, maintaining a solutions-focused approach under pressure.
  • Knowledge Transfer: Mentor junior technicians and develop internal "Standard Operating Procedures" (SOPs) to streamline team workflows.
  • Client Interface: Provide professional technical briefings to clients post-installation, ensuring they understand their new network environment.

Strategic Collaboration

  • Cross-Functional Synergy: Partner with the Network Engineering and IT teams to implement new technologies and resolve cross-platform technical hurdles.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Provide clear, concise technical updates to the Director of Network Operations and clients, translating complex issues into actionable information.

Qualifications

  • Experience: 3–5 years of hands-on experience in Network Field Operations or ISP Technical Support.
  • Networking Mastery: Understanding of Layer 2/3 protocols, including VLAN tagging, Subnetting, and TCP/IP troubleshooting.
  • RF & Fiber: Proven experience aligning Microwave Point-to-Point radios and testing Fiber/Copper with OTDR and power meters.
  • Hardware: Expertise configuring enterprise-grade routers and switches (e.g., Mikrotik, Ubiquiti, or Cisco).
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift 75 lbs and work comfortably at heights (ladders and rooftops).
  • Mobility: Valid Driver’s License and a reliable vehicle for travel to client sites.
  • Credentials: BICSI Certified preferred

Education

Associate's degree in a related field or equivalent professional experience preferred.

Why You’ll Succeed in This Role

This position is built for a sharp, resourceful technician who enjoys being in the field as much as in the office, solving problems, and working with the latest tech. You’ll thrive here if you’re equally comfortable in server closets, on rooftops, or supporting users remotely, always with the goal of keeping networks running smoothly and clients satisfied.

Ready to bring your technical expertise to a role where no two days are the same? Apply now and take your career to the next level as a Telecom Field Technician II
