Fellow-Level System Safety Engineer
We are seeking a Fellow-level System Safety Engineer to support a high-visibility advanced aerospace and defense program in Tucson, AZ. This role is focused on identifying, evaluating, mitigating, and communicating safety risks across the full system lifecycle for complex mission-critical products.
The best-fit candidate is a senior system safety SME with deep MIL-STD-882E experience, prior ownership of system safety programs, strong technical review-board presence, and the ability to brief senior stakeholders, safety approval authorities, and cross-functional engineering leaders.

Pay Rate: $112.50 to $131.75 per hour, depending on experience level and client approval

Responsibilities
- Lead system safety engineering activities for an advanced aerospace and defense program
- Apply rigorous system safety principles across the full product lifecycle
- Lead MIL-STD-882E compliant system safety programs, including management, analysis, evaluation, and verification tasking
- Identify hazards, assess risk, recommend mitigation strategies, and drive corrective actions through closure
- Support safety review boards, engineering safety review boards, failure review boards, independent reviews, and non-advocate reviews
- Brief safety status, risk posture, program concerns, and mitigation plans to senior and executive-level stakeholders
- Lead and coordinate System Safety Working Groups with internal and customer representatives
- Interpret system requirements, customer specifications, military standards, and safety approval expectations
- Partner with Chief Engineers, Program Managers, IPT Leads, Systems Engineering, Software, Firmware, Electrical, Hardware, Test Engineering, Human Systems Integration, and EHS stakeholders
- Analyze hardware, mechanical drawings, electrical drawings, schematics, fault tolerance, latent hazards, and safety requirement compliance
- Support configuration control boards, engineering review boards, and design-change impact assessments
- Establish ongoing feedback loops with functional and program leadership
- Mentor junior system safety engineers and provide technical direction to supporting safety personnel
- Escalate safety risks appropriately and follow through on corrective actions
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics
- 20+ years of relevant engineering experience
- Deep system safety engineering experience
- Experience managing a system safety program
- Strong knowledge of MIL-STD-882E risk assessment concepts
- Experience writing technical reports and executive-level presentations
- Experience briefing safety status to safety approval authorities, technical review boards, and safety review boards
- Active Secret clearance required before start
- U.S. citizenship required
- Ability to work onsite in Tucson, AZ
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in STEM
- Experience briefing military safety review boards
- Experience with WSESRB, SSSTRP, or comparable government safety approval processes
- Experience with Product Safety Officer roles and responsibilities
- Experience with Agile system/software safety implementation
- Experience with EVMS and proposal development
- Experience with engineering change proposals, engineering review boards, and System Safety Working Groups
- Experience with Human Systems Integration and Human Factors Engineering under MIL-STD-1472
- Prior hypersonics, missile systems, effector, weapon system, flight test, or advanced defense program experience
