Summary

The Streets Maintenance Worker is responsible for the performance of a variety of manual tasks following routine procedures. Responsibilities include the operation of light to heavy duty equipment used in construction, repair and maintenance of city streets, parks and other facilities to include the street sweeper, backhoe, heavy roller, dump truck, water truck, loader, motor grader, herbicide truck, tractor shredders, various mowing equipment and any other equipment as required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned)

Operates light to heavy duty equipment;
Assists in the installation and maintenance of streets, alleys, drainage ditches, city parks and other facilities;
Install traffic control devices (signs and pavement markings);
Direct traffic following safety protocol in construction zones;
Crack seals city streets;
Repair of fences, gates, walls and concrete sidewalks;
Maintains City common areas, street right-of-ways and drainage right-of-ways with mowers, tractor shredders, and weed eaters. Trims trees, bushes, hedges and walkways;
Water lawns, shrubs, and trees;
Preventive maintenance routinely performed on vehicles and equipment; report any repairs necessary to vehicle maintenance;
Applies pesticides on a scheduled basis to control pests around all City Facilities, Parks and Right-of-ways;
Maintains a daily log recording all chemicals utilized, location of use and all relevant information;
Maintains an inventory of chemicals and other needed supplies;
Maintain license’s by keeping current with necessary CEU’s (Continuing Education Units);
Completes work orders on daily basis;
Rotating “On Call” standby duty required for weekend coverage of City parks and streets and also for emergency conditions;
Attendance is an essential duty of this position;
Performs other necessary duties and fulfills responsibilities as required by the General Services Superintendent and the Director of Public Works.

Education and/or Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent.
Must have a valid Class "C: Texas Drivers License with acceptable driving record
On-the-job training in heavy equipment operation
Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Must have a valid Class “C” Texas Driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
If not currently held, must obtain licenses/certifications, within one year of hire date, from the Texas Department of Agriculture and the Texas Department of Health in order to perform duties required for pest, weed and vector control.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to pass exams and obtain licenses.
Responsible for the proper and safe operation of a variety of toxic substances.
Ability to make decisions regarding appropriate levels of chemicals and other needed supplies.
Knowledge about the operation of tools and equipment commonly used in streets maintenance and parks construction and maintenance.
Knowledge of safety standards and practices.
Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to operate mechanical equipment (jackhammer, backhoe, street sweeper, heavy roller, loader, grater, etc.), reach with hands and arms, drive vehicles, talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, kneel, crouch, climb, twist, reach, push and pull; and the employee may be required to lift, carry and/or move objects weighing 10-25 lbs. frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Working conditions are primarily outside with exposure to temperature variations; occasional exposure to hazardous chemical irritants, noxious odors and fumes sometimes requiring the use of protective breathing apparatus.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time benefits eligible position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during spring, fall and winter, and 7:00 am – 4:00 pm during the summer, but this position’s work schedule is subject to change depending on the needs of the department and City. Evening and weekend work are also required as needed. Overtime is required upon demand. Must be available for rotating 24 hours, 7 days per week, standby duty.

Travel

An employee in this position is required to drive a vehicle or other equipment to perform daily tasks, or to attend local and out-of-town meetings, functions, conferences, and training.
