Job Description

Job DescriptionJob Title: Maintenance TechnicianJob Description

This role focuses on performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair on steel plate and steel coil manufacturing equipment in a large industrial facility. The Maintenance Technician works primarily in the production area on plasma tables, steel coil lines, and related machinery, with some preventive maintenance on forklifts. The position ensures equipment reliability, minimizes downtime, and supports safe, efficient plant operations through hands-on mechanical and basic electrical work.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance on plant equipment, including plasma tables, steel coil lines, overhead cranes, and forklifts, to ensure safe and reliable operation.
  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and basic electrical issues on production equipment to minimize downtime.
  • Conduct routine lubrication, monitoring, inspections, and general maintenance on plant machinery and systems.
  • Complete work orders accurately and on time, documenting findings, repairs, parts used, and follow-up needs.
  • Identify potential equipment problems during inspections and day-to-day work, and initiate improvement projects or corrective actions as needed.
  • Support production by responding to equipment breakdowns and performing timely repairs in the production area.
  • Communicate regularly with Operators to understand equipment performance, detect problems or concerns, and maintain a smooth flow of operations.
  • Question and evaluate equipment operation to detect abnormal conditions, unusual noises, or performance issues, and take appropriate action.
  • Collaborate with other maintenance personnel when additional resources are required to complete larger or more complex tasks.
  • Perform welding tasks as needed to support repairs or improvement projects, where qualified.
  • Assist with troubleshooting programmable logic controllers (PLCs), where experience allows, to diagnose and resolve control-related issues.
  • Support project-based work around the plant, particularly on non-production days, to improve equipment reliability, safety, and efficiency.
  • Follow all plant safety policies and procedures while working in and around heavy industrial equipment.

Essential Skills

  • At least 1 year of maintenance experience for the apprentice-level role or 10+ years of maintenance experience for the Maintenance Technician-level role.
  • Hands-on experience with preventive maintenance and repair of industrial equipment.
  • Mechanical troubleshooting skills for production machinery and related systems.
  • Experience working with hydraulics in an industrial environment.
  • Experience working with pneumatics in an industrial environment.
  • Ability to perform general maintenance activities, including lubrication, monitoring, repairs, and inspections.
  • Ability to complete work orders and maintenance documentation accurately.
  • Strong communication skills to work effectively with Operators and other maintenance team members.
  • Capability to work safely in a heavy industrial, warehouse-style environment.
  • Willingness to work primarily in the production area, performing preventive maintenance and addressing equipment breakdowns.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • PLC troubleshooting experience (nice to have).
  • Welding experience (nice to have).
  • Experience maintaining overhead cranes (preferred).
  • Experience maintaining plasma tables (preferred).
  • Experience maintaining forklifts (preferred).
  • Experience working with steel plate and steel coil manufacturing equipment is an advantage.
  • Comfort working with both mechanical and basic electrical systems in an industrial setting.

Why Work Here?

Employees benefit from a unionized environment within a leading North American steel plate and coil producer, offering stability and long-term career potential. The organization provides low-cost, comprehensive medical and dental insurance, along with free basic life and disability coverage to support overall well-being. A 401(k) plan with a 100% match up to 5% and profit sharing help employees build financial security for the future. Tuition reimbursement supports ongoing learning and skill development, encouraging career growth within the company. The culture values teamwork, safety, and continuous improvement in a hands-on industrial setting.

Work Environment

This position operates in a large, industrial warehouse environment built on a massive scale, originally designed for shipbuilding. The role follows a mid-shift schedule on a 5x8 workweek, with training on first shift (approximately 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.) for 30 to 90 days depending on experience. After training, the shift typically starts around noon or 1:00 p.m. Once fully trained, Fridays are primarily dedicated to project-based work around the plant rather than production. The facility is old-school industrial, with large doors frequently opening and closing, which makes temperature control challenging. It can be hot in the summer and cold in the winter, and employees should be prepared to work comfortably in varying temperatures while remaining out of direct outdoor elements. The environment includes heavy industrial equipment such as plasma tables, steel coil lines, overhead cranes, and forklifts, and requires adherence to strict safety practices and appropriate industrial work attire.
