Custodian
The City currently has a position open for a Custodian. This position performs repetitive manual work requiring efficient performance of building cleaning and maintenance duties, under general supervision on routine recurring assignments, receiving specific instructions on each new or unusual assignment. This is a bargaining unit position and is non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Standard Labor Act. The probation period for this position is 90 calendar days.
The position is based out of the Athens Community Center. According to the AFSCME Local 2403(1) labor agreement, this position is in the A-1 classification with a current pay range of $23.39 - $25.29 per hour. The normal schedule is 3:30 PM - 12:00 AM, Monday - Friday. The regular reporting location will be the Athens Community Center, 701 E. State St., Athens, OH 45701.

A Civil Service Exam will be administered for this position on Friday, August 14th, 2026 at 10 a.m. at the Athens Community Center, 701 E. State St., Athens, OH 45701.Applicants must show a valid, government issued Picture ID for entry to the test. Applicants must achieve a minimum passing score of 70% on the exam. To be eligible for military credit, a copy of the DD-214 showing honorable discharge must be submitted with the application packet. Members of the National Guard are also eligible for 15% credit. Applications must be received by 4 p.m. on Thursday, August 13th, 2026 to be eligible to sit for the examination.
Essential Functions:
- Sweeps, mops and waxes floors, shampoos carpets, cleans stairs, and elevators. Washes windows.
- Dusts and polishes woodwork, furniture, etc.
- Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, showers, and locker rooms.
- Collects paper and rubbish, mow lawns, cultivates trees and shrubs, cleans sidewalks, and performs a variety of other grounds tasks.
- Makes minor repairs to buildings, building equipment, and furniture.
- Arranges furniture for meetings, banquets, training sessions and testing.
- May open building in morning, secures building at end of shift.
- Climbs ladders to replace light bulbs, clean, etc.
- Meets with salesperson to select/recommend cleaning supplies and equipment.
- Routinely inspects public areas for cleanliness and safety hazards.
- Assumes additional responsibilities and performs other related duties as needed.
Position Qualifications:
- A high school education, or other equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Good oral communications, basic math skills, knowledge of commercial building cleaning practices, including gym floors, supplies, and equipment.
- A minimum of one-year prior experience in commercial cleaning, a valid Ohio drivers license and an excellent driving record. As a condition of continued employment, must maintain driving privileges and excellent driving record. Failure to do so may result in discipline up to and including discharge.
Position Specifications
- Must be able to meet the attendance requirements of the position. Shifts and work location may vary depending upon staffing needs and may include weekends and holidays.
- Majority of shift is spent standing, walking, stooping, bending, climbing, lifting, carrying, and moving boxes, equipment, furniture or varying sizes and weight. May be required to drive city vehicle to other work locations.
This position has been identified as being occupationally-at-risk for bloodborne pathogens. Safety precautions and procedures must be followed in the exercise of duties.
A background check is required post-offer.
New hires are required to be certified in First Aid and CPR at the time of the next available class.
