Job Title: Commercial / Industrial Chiller Technician

Location: Lakewood, NJ

Position Type: Full-Time

Reports To: Service Manager / Operations Director

Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced and certified Chiller Technician to join our HVAC/R service team. In this role, you will be responsible for installing, inspecting, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing large-scale commercial and industrial chiller systems (centrifugal, screw, scroll, and reciprocating). The ideal candidate has deep technical knowledge of thermodynamics, electrical controls, and refrigerant safety, along with a strong commitment to preventative maintenance and client satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities

Maintenance & Inspection

  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on air-cooled and water-cooled chillers, cooling towers, pumps, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Inspect electrical wiring, motor starters, compressors, heat exchangers, and safety controls to ensure peak operating efficiency.
  • Monitor oil levels, oil pressure, fluid levels, and refrigerant charges; perform tube brushing and oil/filter changes as required.

Diagnostics & Repair

  • Diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration faults using electronic meters, pressure gauges, and diagnostic software.
  • Perform major component overhauls and repairs, including compressor rebuilds/replacements, valve replacements, and leak repairs.
  • Troubleshoot low-voltage and high-voltage control circuits, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and Building Automation System (BAS) interfaces.

Compliance, Safety & Documentation

  • Recover, evacuate, and charge refrigerants in strict compliance with EPA regulations and environmental standards.
  • Maintain clear, accurate service logs, work orders, and safety records for every site visit.
  • Adhere to all OSHA safety protocols, lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) procedures, and PPE requirements in industrial environments.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Certifications:
    • Universal EPA Section 608 Certification (Required).
    • Valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
    • Journeyman HVAC/R license or formal vocational training preferred.
    • Factory training/certifications from major manufacturers (Trane, Carrier, York/Johnson Controls, Daikin) a strong plus.
  • Experience: Minimum 3–5 years of hands-on experience working directly with commercial or industrial chiller systems.
  • Skills:
    • Proficient in reading electrical schematics, piping diagrams, and control logic prints.
    • Strong working knowledge of hydronic systems, fluid mechanics, and digital control systems (BAS/PLC).
    • Excellent physical stamina (ability to lift up to 50 lbs, work on ladders/rooftops, and work in mechanical rooms).
