Golf Course Laborer (also known as Groundskeeper or Maintenance Laborer)

Job Summary

The Golf Course Laborer is an entry-level to semi-skilled position responsible for performing routine manual labor and maintenance tasks to keep the golf course, grounds, and related facilities in excellent playing condition and aesthetically pleasing. Working under the supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, or Foreman, the laborer helps maintain turf, bunkers, landscaping, and course setup while operating equipment safely and following all safety and environmental protocols.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Mow greens, tees, fairways, aprons, and roughs to specified heights using walk-behind or riding mowers.

• Maintain sand bunkers by raking, edging, and ensuring proper sand depth and drainage.

• Perform daily course setup: change hole cups and pins, move tee markers, fill ball washers, clean water coolers, and replace towels/flags as needed.

• Operate hand tools and powered equipment such as string trimmers, edgers, blowers, rakes, shovels, and utility vehicles.

• Assist with irrigation tasks, including hand-watering, checking sprinkler heads, and basic repairs under supervision.

• Perform landscaping duties: weed, mulch, plant, prune shrubs/trees, edge cart paths, and maintain flower beds.

• Remove debris, leaves, trash, fallen branches, and litter from the course and grounds.

• Repair divots, ball marks, and damaged turf areas; assist with seeding, sodding, topdressing, and aeration as directed.

• Help apply fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides under supervision (following all safety and regulatory guidelines).

• Assist with minor construction, drainage projects, equipment cleaning, and special event/tournament preparations.

• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred (entry-level positions often accept equivalent experience).

• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (required for operating utility vehicles and light equipment).

• Previous experience in landscaping, groundskeeping, or golf course maintenance is preferred but not always required; willingness to learn is essential.

• Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work both independently and as part of a team.

• Availability for early mornings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and work in all weather conditions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Basic knowledge of turf care, landscaping, or use of grounds maintenance tools and equipment.

• Ability to operate mowers, trimmers, blowers, and utility carts safely.

• Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high aesthetic and playing standards.

• Reliability, punctuality, and a positive, safety-conscious attitude.

• Physical ability to perform manual labor outdoors for extended periods.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

• Prolonged standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motions.

• Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 lbs regularly (occasionally more with assistance).

• Work primarily outdoors in varying weather (heat, cold, rain, humidity) and exposure to dust, pollen, noise, chemicals, and equipment.

• Early morning start times are common to prepare the course before play begins. (7:00 A.M.-3:30 P.M.)

Preferred Qualifications (Nice-to-Have). Work one weekend day/ week for overtime is required until noon. We do work holidays but will be compensated for the time. (Overtime is available from April-November)

• Experience operating specialized golf course equipment (greens mowers, bunker rakes, aerifiers, etc.).

• Basic mechanical aptitude for minor equipment maintenance.

• Knowledge of turfgrass types, mowing heights, or irrigation systems.

• Pesticide applicator certification (or ability to obtain) where required by local regulations.
