Job Title: Facilities & Building Services Specialist Location: Rockville, MD Hours/Schedule: Part-Time (24 hours/week + Rotating On-Call Coverage); schedule is extremely flexible Compensation: $28.00–$34.00/hour (+ $3/hour on-call pay) Type: 6-month contract
Overview Our client, a growing biotechnology organization in Rockville, MD, is seeking an experienced Facilities & Building Services Specialist to support its research campus. This is a great opportunity for someone with a strong facilities, building maintenance, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical background who is looking for a flexible part-time schedule. The role offers a variety of hands-on work supporting critical building systems, coordinating outside vendors, and helping keep laboratory, office, and vivarium operations running smoothly.
Responsibilities
- Monitor and troubleshoot critical building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, boilers, humidifiers, and BMS
- Perform facility inspections and help coordinate preventative maintenance and repairs
- Work with contractors and vendors to coordinate maintenance, security, janitorial, pest control, and other building services
- Respond to facility needs and after-hours emergencies during assigned on-call rotations
- Support day-to-day building operations, including office moves, workstation setups, conference rooms, and onboarding needs
- Assist with shipping/receiving, mail services, and general facilities support as needed
- Maintain a safe working environment by following established safety procedures, PPE requirements, and facility standards
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required
- 5+ years of facilities, building maintenance, or related hands-on experience is preferred
- Strong mechanical aptitude with experience in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, boilers, humidifiers, utilities, or similar building systems
- Experience working with contractors and vendors in a commercial, laboratory, healthcare, manufacturing, or other regulated environment
- Comfortable working independently, troubleshooting issues, and taking initiative when facility needs arise
- Ability to participate in a rotating on-call schedule with a one-hour response requirement, including occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and access rooftop mechanical equipment
- Comfortable supporting a research environment that includes laboratory and vivarium operations
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required to support travel between facilities and meet the one-hour response requirement during assigned on-call coverage
