Job Description
Community Manager\n
HeyCounsel · San Diego, CA (on-site / hybrid)
\n
Full-time
\n
About HeyCounsel\n
HeyCounsel is the community platform for independent lawyers. Hundreds of solo, boutique, and fractional attorneys use us to trade advice, run better practices, and stop building alone. Our members hang out daily in Slack, show up for virtual and in-person events, join curated masterminds, and plug into a firm-like platform that helps them grow and run their firms.
\n
\n
We're hiring a high-energy Community Manager in San Diego to own the day-to-day pulse of that community, and to make belonging feel real online and offline.
\n
The role\n
You'll be the connective tissue of HeyCounsel: welcoming people, sparking conversation, running events people actually want to attend, and making sure ambassadors and mastermind groups stay sharp. This is a people-first job for someone who thrives in Slack threads, Zoom rooms, and San Diego meetups in the same week.
\n
What you'll do\n
\n
Community & Slack
\n
- \n
- Own the day-to-day energy of our Slack: greet new members, keep channels useful, surface wins, and step in when things go quiet or sideways
- Build rituals that make the community feel alive (standups, AMAs, themed threads, weekly highlights)
- Listen hard to members, turn feedback into product and programming ideas, and close the loop
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
Events (virtual & in person)
\n
- \n
- Plan, host, and follow up on virtual roundtables, office hours, and member gatherings
- Run in-person events in San Diego and support regional meetups elsewhere (venue, invites, run-of-show, on-site presence)
- Partner with members and partners on co-hosted activations that feel valuable, not salesy
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
Ambassador program
\n
- \n
- Recruit, onboard, and coach ambassadors who represent HeyCounsel in their markets and practice areas
- Give ambassadors clear goals, light playbooks, and recognition so the program scales without going stale
- Track activity and surface what's working (and what isn't)
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
Mastermind program
\n
- \n
- Help stand up and support right-sized mastermind groups (matching, kickoffs, cadence, accountability)
- Stay close enough to know when a group is thriving vs. drifting, and intervene early
- Keep facilitators and members set up with simple structure and resources
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
Ops & storytelling
\n
- \n
- Keep track of member engagement so we know who's active, who's at risk, and who's ready for more
- Capture stories, testimonials, and highlights for social, email, and recruiting
- Work tightly with founding team on priorities; this role wears many hats by design
\n
\n
\n
\n
Who you are\n
- \n
- Based in (or relocating to) San Diego
- High energy, warm, and naturally good at pulling people into conversation
- Experienced running community, events, customer success, campus orgs, or similar people-heavy work (legal background is a plus, not required)
- Comfortable living in Slack and Zoom, and hosting in-person events at night or on weekends when it matters
- AI-pilled. You love tinkering with AI tools, creating automations, and using AI where it helps (but also cognizant of where it hurts).
- Organized enough to juggle multiple programs without dropping balls
- Clear writer and speaker; you can draft an invite, run a room, and send a crisp follow-up
- Bias for action: you'd rather ship a great meetup this month than perfect a deck about one
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
Nice to have\n
- \n
- Prior community or events work at a startup, membership org, or professional network
- Familiarity with lawyers, professional services, or B2B SaaS communities
- Comfort with basic tools (Slack, Notion, Google Workspace, Claude)
- Interest in law, entrepreneurship or working with entrepreneurial lawyers
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
What we offer\n
- \n
- Competitive salary and potential for equity (details in process)
- Real ownership of community programs that members feel every week
- Small team, high trust
- A mission that matters: independent lawyers shouldn't have to build alone
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
